Local filmmaker getting attention at Sundance

Maybe it was an early sign of celebrity.

While speaking by phone with Lawrence filmmaker Kevin Willmott about his movie “C.S.A.” (“Confederate States of America”) a male voice in the background could be heard saying, “I’m going to be reviewing the film on my blog.”

“We’re up in the hills,” Willmott said about Park City, Utah, site of the annual Sundance Film Festival.”I’m a flat top guy; a plainsman. But so far, so good.”

Willmott had just finished his first radio interview of the 10-day festival which began Wednesday and concludes Jan. 25. It was with National Public Radio.Willmott said he was looking forward to the film’s first Sundance screening Friday night.

Willmott said that the buzz about “C.S.A.” was strong on the streets of Park City.He said that people were asking about the film and wanting to see it.

Regardless if the film takes home any prizes, Willmott said he felt the attention garnered by being in Sundance had already reaped rewards.

Spike Lee has joined Marvin Voth as an executive producer on the film.

“It was really great to see Spike Lee respond to the movie like he did.He really gets it. He will be very helpful,” Willmott said.

Willmott said about 20-25 Kansas University students and members of the crew would be at Sundance making the event very special.

“We can really celebrate the experience together,” he said.
