Wal-Mart tactics

To the editor:

Regarding Monday’s Wal-Mart story:

Excellent article. Of course, no store can survive without customers. My husband and I have stopped going to Wal-Mart since learning about some of its unethical practices. There’s always Target.

Another thought: The Los Angeles source said it made no sense emptying city coffers trying to keep Wal-Mart away. That’s especially true today, when so much unemployment has so drastically reduced tax revenues. Can Lawrence afford to spend what revenue it has fighting Wal-Mart? Let’s face it, if we don’t fill our potholes today, we’ll have to rebuild our streets tomorrow. As go streets, so go other city services.

Perhaps the answer would be not to fight Wal-Mart’s arrival but to enforce employment, taxation and other laws so that Wal-Mart either cleans up its act or moves out! After all, you or I would be required to clean up or get out if we ran a business.
