Body found in K.C. house fire rubble

? Investigators on Tuesday said they found human remains in the rubble of a burned-out home, located near the spot where a paramedic responding to house fire across the street was shot and injured, authorities said.

Kansas City Police Sgt. Tony Sanders said it would take time to determine the identity of the remains, and he would not say if police thought they were those of the man who allegedly opened fire on the emergency crews Monday afternoon.

“It’s undetermined right now if the remains are male or female,” Sanders said. He would not say how long the tests would take.

Sanders also said police still were looking for several people to question in the case, but he would not identify their connection to the case or say who shooter might be. Sanders said investigators were considering the possibility the fires were set by someone who wanted to shoot at emergency crews.

“That’s one of the possibilities we’re looking at,” Sanders said.

Sanders also said police were still trying to determine who owned the two homes that caught fire.

Paramedic Mary Seymour, a 15-year veteran of the Metropolitan Ambulance Service Trust, was in critical but stable condition Tuesday after undergoing surgery Monday for two gunshot wounds. Both bullets pierced her right lung, and one also grazed her heart, said Dr. Hillary Chollett, director of trauma services at Research Medical Center.

Seymour was expected to recover, but Chollett said it was unclear when she would be able to return to work.
