Lion, four Firebirds named all-league

Four Free State High swimmers and Lawrence High diver Nick Leet have been named All-Sunflower League.

Alex Brunfeldt, Chris Wolff, Anthony Portela and Chris Sellon were the Firebirds chosen, based on points contributed to the team total. Freshman Chase Torgerson was a second-team pick.

Leet was crowned league diving champion Saturday.

Tongie’s Stein signs

Tonganoxie High’s Nick Stein, an All-Kaw Valley League lineman, has signed a letter of intent to play football at MidAmerica Nazarene in Olathe.

BHS coach honored

Baldwin High’s Mike Spielman has been named girls cross country coach of the year by the Kansas Coaches Assn. Spielman led the Baldwin girls to their second consecutive Class 4A state title last November. In addition, the boys team — also under Spielman — won its sixth straight state title.

Lion picks Bethel

Lawrence High’s Tim Haynes will sign a letter of intent today to play soccer at Bethel College in North Newton. Haynes will sign the tender at 2:45 p.m. today in the LHS library.
