Public service

To the editor:

Last Tuesday, I took my 16-year-old daughter to get her driver’s license. After waiting for 20 minutes we were told that she would not be allowed to take the driving portion of the test because conditions were too hazardous. The snowplow had not visited Tanger Mall to clear the snow left from the storm that had passed through the week before.

I asked if that was going to happen soon and was told they didn’t know. Part of that evening and the next afternoon I spent on the telephone trying to locate who would be in charge of clearing the lot so that my daughter could test. Late Wednesday, I was called back and told that the Division of Motor Vehicles would allow driving tests. She tested with the lot in essentially the same condition as the night before.

I am still confused about the relationship between the maintenance policies of Tanger and the safety policies of the DMV. I understand the need for safety, but there just seems to be a total lack of concern for public service.
