State attractions

To the editor:

Do you ever watch “Sunflower Journeys” on Channel 11? On Jan. 29, it was an excellent show regarding the proposed National Heritage Area of eastern Kansas. Judy Billings, director of our Convention and Visitors Bureau was featured on the show and explained the ideas and what the “Bleeding Kansas” area could potentially do to increase awareness of Kansas history and bring visitors to our state and city. Somebody said not long ago that we needed “attractions” to bring people to Lawrence. This is certainly a future example.

Monday’s Journal-World had an article on “Buffalo Commons” which I found very interesting. Can you imagine how many Americans have never seen a buffalo in its natural habitat? This has tourism potential also. On a recent trip to South Dakota’s Custer State Park, we took our group via Jeeps with guides into the buffalo herds in the park. The four grandkids will never forget being right in the center of a real live herd of buffalo — the grandparents won’t either; they are HUGE ANIMALS! Imagine such an attraction in Kansas.

We have been enjoying the many sights and sounds of Kansas since retiring. There are many unique attractions out there including the fabled “World’s Largest Ball of Twine” at Cawker City. Anything we can do to promote our city and state will help our economy.
