To the editor:
Ellen Goodman's column in the Feb. 8 Journal-World about America's "no-car weight loss plan" should tell Lawrence citizens what part we play in this problem. She tells us that the size of all Americans is growing, and it is now the battle of the bulge. This is due to spending too much time in our cars because we live farther from work and shopping. This means the more you drive, the more you weigh.
She also tells us that if we don't care that every gallon of gas puts 20 pounds of carbon dioxide in the air, maybe we'll care that it puts these pounds on the hips. What can citizens do to help solve this problem? The first step is to watch where we spend our money. That might discourage further retail store development on the edge of Lawrence and encourage more walking and better health for us all. Lawrence will grow, but I hope it's not at the hips.
Lester C. Marsh,
Lawrence
