To the editor:
The article in Thursday's Journal-World may have missed the point of College Goal Sunday, to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Dole Institute of Politics.
The event is designed to provide a place for people who are considering post-secondary education to visit with financial aid counselors for assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The counselors, who come from a variety of schools in the area, can also answer questions that future students may have about the college search process, paying for college, student loan debt and many other questions. It doesn't matter what kind of school a student is considering, i.e. public or private, 2- or 4-year, vo-tech, or proprietary.
I can assure your readers that most students qualify for some form of federal student aid. It may not always be grant aid. A student or parent may need to borrow to help pay for college.
Future students won't know what choices they have, however, unless they complete the FAFSA. I encourage prospective students and their families to attend College Goal Sunday if they have any questions about the FAFSA or other financial concerns related to college. We will answer your questions as best we can.
