Despite the Lawrence School District canceling today's classes Thursday afternoon, a final decision on the status of athletic events won't be determined until sometime this morning.
The Lawrence High girls and boys basketball teams were scheduled to play home games against Shawnee Mission South starting at 5:30 p.m. Free State's girls and boys basketball teams were scheduled to play at Shawnee Mission North starting at 5:30 p.m.
"Considering we're both playing Shawnee Mission schools," LHS athletic director Ron Commons said, "I'd guess either both of us will play or both of us won't."
However, postponing could result in more problems.
The LHS boys team, for the most part, has a full schedule until sub-states start in early March, including a game Saturday with Free State.
The Firebirds are in a similar situation.
"The only times we'd have left would be on Saturdays," FSHS athletic director Steve Grant said, adding he thought there was a 50-50 chance the games would be played today.
Also in limbo is the Sunflower League swimming and diving championships at 5 p.m. today in Olathe.
If that was postponed, the likely solution would be to start the meet Saturday and have the finals take place Monday afternoon.
