Lawrence public schools officials announced Friday morning that school district activities scheduled for the day will be held as planned.

Julie Boyle, the school district’s public information director, said school officials canceled classes Friday partially because of the lack of equipment to clear the six inches of snow that fell Thursday from all of the district’s school parking lots and sidewalks before Friday morning.

However, a decision was made Friday morning to hold the planned high school activities.

Free State High School events scheduled for Friday include boys and girls basketball games at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Shawnee Mission North.

Lawrence High School events include boys and girls basketball, at 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. The LHS teams host Shawnee Mission South. The boys’ game will be the featured Hy-Vee High School Game of the Week at 10:30 p.m. Friday on Sunflower Broadband’s Channel 6.

Boys swim teams at both schools are having a Sunflower League meet at Olathe East Friday.

Perry-Lecompton’s boys and girls teams will play as scheduled at Immaculata in Leavenworth.

Boyle said Friday afternoon that the Southwest-West junior high basketball games originally scheduled for Friday at Southwest have been rescheduled for Saturday. The eighth-grade game
will be played at 10 a.m., followed by the ninth-grade game about 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

Lawrence High and Free State will follow a Seminar Day schedule on Monday, she said.

The Lawrence area has been getting light snow all morning. And it should last until midafternoon, said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

Sayers said the light snow wouldn’t be much of a problem and that the temperatures were warm enough for it to melt on treated streets at it came down.

Friday afternoon’s temperatures will begin to drop from the morning high of 27. Winds are blowing out of the northwest at 15 mph, but drifting won’t be a problem.

“Tonight, our clouds finally start to break apart by the early morning hours,” he said. “But it’s going to get cold — 6 degrees for the overnight low.”

Sunshine will return to Lawrence on Saturday. “That’s the good news. The bad news is that it only warms up to 16 for the afternoon high,” Sayers said.

The winds drop off under clear skies on Saturday night, with the overnight low falling to right around zero.

“We have a chance for light snow Sunday evening and into Sunday night,” he said.
