Government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed today in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

They also will be closed in most area towns.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the general services administration and the federal courts.

City of Lawrence refuse and trash collection will make its scheduled commercial pickups today. Scheduled commercial pickups in McLouth and Eudora will be made as well.

Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free today and Saturday.

Most banks will be open today but closed Saturday.

The Lawrence T will operate its normal hours and routes today, but it will not run Saturday.

Kansas University’s unions and libraries will be closed today and Saturday.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed today, Saturday and Sunday.

The post office will operate normal hours and services today. The post office will be closed Saturday, though Express Mail packages will be delivered.

Douglas County Senior Services Senior Meals Program will be closed today. Lawrence Meals on Wheels will make its normal deliveries.

The business offices of the Journal World will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. today and Saturday. Phone inquiries will be answered during those hours as well.

Most liquor stores will be open today, but closed Saturday.

USA Today will not be delivered today.

Parks and Recreation

Lawrence recreation centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today but closed Saturday.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. It will be closed Saturday.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will operate on limited hours today. The lap swimming area will be open from noon to 1 p.m. The zero depth and children’s area will be open from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. And the waterslide and diving area will be open from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Indoor Aquatic Center will be closed Saturday.

The Carl Knox Natatorium will be closed today and Saturday.

Eagle Bend Gold Course will be open during its normal hours today and Saturday.
