Teen charged in apartment shooting

Suspect faces four counts of attempted second-degree murder

The man accused of opening fire on four people at a northwest Lawrence apartment complex earlier this week was charged Thursday with four counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Authorities say Randy J. Johnson, 19, on Tuesday fired approximately six shots at a group on the balcony of the Boardwalk Apartments, 524 Frontier Road. The incident occurred after members of the group confronted Johnson and some of his friends about loud parties at the complex. One of the bullets struck a Lawrence man in the back, though he was not seriously injured. The man’s girlfriend, a 21-year-old Baldwin woman, sustained minor injuries after two bullets struck her leg.

Johnson made his first appearance in court before Judge Peggy Kittel via a closed circuit television feed from the Douglas County Jail, where he has been in custody since his arrest shortly after the shooting.

Johnson, whose address the Douglas County Jail log listed as 1600 Haskell Ave., told the court that he had been “back and forth” for a while, and had recently moved to Lawrence from Mississippi to take care of a sick uncle.

But prosecutor Brandon Jones contended that Johnson had very weak ties to the Lawrence community and would pose a serious flight risk. He asked that bond be set at $150,000. Kittel set it at $125,000.

If convicted, Johnson could faced up to 247 months in prison, plus a fine for each attempted second-degree murder charge.

Johnson said he moved to Lawrence roughly a month ago. He is unemployed.

Johnson will make his next appearance in court with a court-appointed attorney on Wednesday.
