South is priority

To the editor:

I would like to strongly urge the school board and school district to submit a bond issue that would ONLY request funding for building a new South Junior High.

While I never had a child attend South, I have been in it. The design is terrible; it’s depressing, confusing, unsafe … I could go on.

I know portables are less than desirable. I know the cafeterias and gyms need improving at the junior highs. But, I also know that my raise this year barely covered the cost of the increase in my health insurance. I know that the cost of gasoline has skyrocketed. I know that I am already paying for two other school bond issues. I also know the disparity in income continues to widen.

I love the Lawrence schools. My children had wonderful teachers; the music program and others are excellent. If I could, I would give all the teachers a substantial raise and lower classroom size.

However, at this time I cannot support a bond issue for the high schools or technology. I urge the board to submit a bond issue which I believe is the only one which will pass: to replace South Junior High. I will regrettably vote NO on an issue that contains funding for additional projects.
