A coincidence?

To the editor:

The Dec. 11 Saturday column discussed the “Absence of KU, (and) city from (U.S. congressional) funding list is cause for concern.”
Hmmm. As I recall, Kansas has 105 counties. Further recall tells us that in the 2000 election, 103 counties voted for Republican candidates, and specifically, they voted for the winner, Pres. Bush. Douglas, our county, and Lawrence, our city, voted for Democrat Al Gore. In addition, parts of Douglas County and the city of Lawrence voted again for Democrat Dennis for Congress.

Furthermore, the recent election discloses that there are still 105 counties in Kansas, and in the 2004 election, guess what? That’s right; 103 counties went for Bush while Lawrence and Douglas County went for Kerry and parts of Douglas County and the city of Lawrence put Moore back in Congress for his third term.

Very recently we (who are interested in such things) have read several findings vis-a-vis college professors and their political voting records. It’s nothing less than shocking to find that the average of colleges from coast-to-coast is 88 percent Democrat and 12 percent Republican! And, in this same regard, don’t forget the history of four of our city commissioners.

Just wondering, but could it be that our state’s Republicans in Congress, two U.S. senators and three U.S. representatives, are tired of having the city and KU bite the hand(s) that feed them?

Hmmm, well, maybe these events simply represent a congruency of coincidence. Then again, maybe not.
