Flawed bill

To the editor:

If you’re one of the millions of Americans feeling safer, since the passing of the intelligence reform bill, well, stop it. The new bill will do nothing to deter terrorist attacks in the United States.

Opponents of the bill, while a minority, include Sen. Robert Byrd, the insightful congressman from West Virginia. These stalwart men and women, predominately House Republicans, along with Mr. Byrd and several other Democrats, all agree that the new intelligence bill is flawed, nothing more than a bureaucratic reshuffling of previous programs.

Even more disturbing was the Bush administration’s pressuring of House Republicans into scrapping important immigration enforcement provisions of the bill that bars illegal aliens from obtaining driver’s licenses or using fake consular ID cards.

While President Bush has demonstrated that he can show resolve against Mideast terrorists, he must do likewise against Mexico President Vicente Fox, Teddy Kennedy, Sam Brownback, and immigration lawyers.
