Homeless woman’s body found in city park

Police are investigating the death of a transient whose body was found early this morning in a city park just west of Lawrence’s downtown.
Officers were called to Buford Watson Park, Seventh and Tennessee streets, just before 4 a.m. by a man who had been handing out blankets to the homeless. The man told police he saw the woman in the gazebo and thought she was sleeping, but found her to be unresponsive.

Police say there are no obvious signs of foul play.

The woman was identified as a 34-year-old transient, but police are not releasing her name, pending notification of next of kin.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today in Topeka.
