Candidate announces bid for city commission

The Lawrence City Commission race has its second official candidate.

Tom Bracciano, the division director of operations and facility planning for the Lawrence Public Schools, filed this afternoon for one of three seats on the City Commission.

Bracciano said he would run a campaign that focused on giving Lawrence children more opportunities to grow up to live, work and stay in Lawrence.

He also became the second announced candidate who has concerns about the city’s ban on indoor smoking in most public places.

Bracciano said he’ll advocate that the smoking ban should be put to a vote of the public.

“My position is that when you are going to legislate legal, social behavior, I think it is best to have the public vote on it,” Bracciano said.

Commissioners Sue Hack, David Dunfield and David Schauner all have terms that end in April. Hack has filed for re-election. Dunfield has said he will not seek another term. Schauner has not yet announced his plan.

Candidates have until noon on Jan. 25 to file. If seven or more candidates file, there will be a primary election on March 1. The general election will be on April 5.
