Dog bite case resolved without ‘Judge Judy’

A lawsuit involving a 10-year-old Lawrence girl bitten by a dog didn’t end up going Hollywood, after all.

Last week a judge in Douglas County’s small-claims court ordered dog owner Jeffery Frye to pay Claire Hunt’s family $340.84 for medical bills and a new pair of jeans, plus $31 in court costs. Frye, a local financial adviser, lost the case by default when he failed to appear at a Thursday hearing, according to records.

Claire claimed that Frye’s dog ran after her and bit her on the leg March 24 in the 1000 block of Columbine Court.

The case almost was settled on the TV airwaves instead of in Lawrence. Last month, after a scout for the “Judge Judy” show came to Douglas County and spotted the case, a producer asked Hunt and Frye to settle their dispute on the show.

Frye initially said he was interested, then reconsidered.
