Cell tower on planning agenda

Lawrence-Douglas County planning commissioners will consider a request for a new 90-foot communications tower at 1694 N. 1748 Road in northeast Douglas County. The tower would be built for Verizon Wireless on property that is owned by Walters Farms LLC. Planning Commission staff members are recommending approval of the project as long as a plan to stop lighting of the tower from intruding upon neighbors is completed. If approved by the Planning Commission, the project will need to win final approval from the Douglas County Commission.

Other items on the agenda include:

  • Final plat for a QuikTrip Store at northeast corner of 23rd Street and Haskell Avenue.
  • Final plat for Stone Ridge North, a 19-acre housing development, east of George Williams Way extended and west of Stoneridge Drive extended.
  • Final plat for Raeta, a 13-lot subdivision on 159 acres at 1635 E. 50 Road.
  • Receive annexation agreement from First United Methodist Church for property south of U.S. Highway 40 and west of Kansas Highway 10.
  • Preliminary plat for First United Methodist Church south of U.S. 40 and west of K-10.
  • Consideration of the new development code to replace existing zoning ordinance.
  • Preliminary plat for Lake Estates at Alvamar, a 12-acre single-family and duplex subdivision at the northeast corner of 22nd Terrace and Lake Pointe Drive.

The commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
