Firebirds secure third place

? Brady Morningstar’s wrist injury didn’t hurt Free State High’s offense Friday night.

It might even have made the Firebirds more dangerous.

Free State High's Danny Pike shoots against Roeland Park Miege's Manuel Medina in the first half. Pike score nine points in the Firebirds' 77-57 victory Friday in the third-place game of the Olathe South Invitational.

“I came to the game just to get some assists and get everybody some shots,” said Morningstar, who injured his right wrist in Thursday night’s 57-45 semifinal loss to Olathe South at the Olathe South Invitational. “As the game went on, my adrenaline was flowing, and I didn’t notice it as much.”

Morningstar’s shooting hand was heavily wrapped in a 77-57 victory over Miege in Friday’s third-place game. Normally a dangerous perimeter shooter, Morningstar didn’t take a single shot from three-point range.

“I didn’t even think about shooting from behind the arc,” said Morningstar, who scored a team-high 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting and also grabbed eight rebounds. “I tried to drive to the basket or get eight-footers.”

The senior guard also dished out seven assists, driving the lane or baseline and setting up his teammates for easy baskets.

“He always does,” said senior Matt Green, who scored a career-high 16 points. “He’s a good passer, and he sees the floor real well.”

Morningstar scored six points in the first quarter, and Green added five as the Firebirds (3-1) raced to a 20-4 lead.

Miege (2-2) looked as if it still was trying to recover from Thursday’s 63-51 semifinal loss to Shawnee Mission West. The Stags turned the ball over 20 times against Free State’s relentless defense.

“What a difference 24 hours makes,” FSHS coach Jack Schreiner said. “That was a very good team we just played, and we handled them very easily. We came out very focused. That’s probably as good as I’ve ever seen Brady play. … We were more focused. That’s what I told the kids. We caught them on a good night.”

Free State High's Brady Morningstar, left, elevates for a shot against Roeland Park Miege. The Firebirds hammered Miege, 77-57, Friday in the third-place game of the Olathe South Invitational.

Guard Isacc Miles led Miege with 16 points, but the Stags’ four other starters contributed just 18. If not for reserves Carl Miller and Aaron Anderson, who combined for 19 points and 10 rebounds, the game would have been even more lopsided.

Free State scored the game’s first nine points, led by as many as 18 in the first half and owned a 36-20 halftime lead. The Stags cut the deficit to 14 twice early in the third quarter, but Green answered both times.

In addition to Green’s 16 points, Danny Pike had nine, and Bobby Underwood and Scott Heitshusen had eight each.

“I knew Brady wasn’t going to be shooting as much,” Green said. “Coach told us before the game that somebody else had to score. We had to step up.”

The Firebirds will play their final game before winter break at 7 p.m. Friday at Lawrence High.
