Firebirds thump Lansing, 61-37

? Free State High’s girls basketball squad got off to a good start at the Bonner Springs Tournament, beating Lansing, 61-37, on Thursday.

Jenna Brantley set the pace for the Firebirds, scoring 14 points and grabbing six steals. Lauren Kimball added 10 points, and Kelsey Harrison had six points and five steals.

Banaka Okwuone added eight rebounds for Free State (1-1).

“We put pressure on them early in the game, and I think we wore them down,” Free State coach Bryan Duncan said.

“Our pressure really hurt them.”

Free State jumped to a 31-16 halftime lead, then widened the gap to 50-24 after the third quarter.

“Defensively we played real well in the first three quarters and were able to get a lot of points out of our defense,” Duncan said.

The Firebirds will play Topeka Seaman today in the tournament semifinals. Gametime is set for 3 p.m.
