Clinic stocked with flu shots

Vaccine session planned this weekend

An additional 200 doses of flu vaccine will be available for a community clinic this weekend, health officials said Thursday.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department received a shipment of 320 doses Wednesday, said spokeswoman Janelle Martin.

“Some of those will go to people residing in local nursing homes or assisted living,” Martin said. “But we will have 1,500 shots available at the clinic on Sunday.”

Originally, 1,300 doses of vaccine were to be available for the clinic, which will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse on the KU campus.

Although the clinic will be at KU, it is open to the entire community. It is a joint effort of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department and Kansas University Student Health Services.

Only people in a high-priority group as designated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will receive a shot. Generally, the list includes pregnant women, people older than 65 or younger than 2, and people with weakened immune systems.

The cost for a shot is $12 for children younger than 3 and $17 for all others. People should have their medical insurance cards with them for billing purposes. Martin added that the health department would not deny people a shot if they weren’t able to pay.

Health officials involved with the clinic are urging people not to come before 11 a.m., which is when doors will open for the clinic.
