Sunny and warmer by afternoon

December shivered into Lawrence this morning, finding wintry conditions — snow on the ground, frost on the windshields, temperatures in the 20s and windchills in the teens.

“It is a cold morning, but temperatures are starting to rise,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

About 8:15 a.m., the temperature was 24, but the southwest 5 mph wind made it feel like it was only 18, Schack said. However, the high today will reach 45, which is just a few degrees below the average high for this date of 47.

“I don’t know if you’re going to notice the temperature as much as all that sunshine,” Schack said. After several days of cloudy weather, sunny skies are expected throughout the day today.

“We have plenty of sun today and that lasts through tomorrow,” she said.

Tonight’s skies will remain mostly clear, with the low dropping overnight into the low 20s, she said.

Thursday’s morning low will start out at 21 and climb by Thursday afternoon to 44, with only a few mid-level clouds in the skies, Schack said.

Friday morning’s low will be 24, with the high reaching 47 under scattered clouds.
