Letter language

To the editor:

Your letter policy states: “Letters should … be of public interest and should avoid name-calling, and libelous language.” Yet, I have seen numerous letters to the editor published by the Journal-World that clearly violate this policy, particularly during this election season.

“Anyone’s better” (Public Forum, Nov. 23) concerning John Ashcroft is a recent blatant example. What is in the public interest about this letter? How can you read it as anything more than name-calling?

Many have complained about the poor quality of discourse regarding the issues in the recent campaign. The Journal-World could contribute toward rectifying the problem by following its own policy and reassigning staff members who apparently cannot reasonably interpret it.

David Barfield,
