Enrollment at 889 in first week at Haskell

Haskell Cherokee language instructor Andy Girty, left, greets sophomore Jimmy Beason in Cherokee as Natasha Henson looks on. Girty immersed his students in the Cherokee language on Friday.

Haskell Indian Nations University reported that 889 students were enrolled Friday, up nearly 4 percent from early, unofficial enrollment numbers reported last fall.

Enrollment doesn’t close until next week, said Manny King, registrar.

“Students are still coming in,” King said. “They have until Tuesday.”

Classes began Wednesday.

King said he expected enrollment to peak around 950 students. Last year’s official fall enrollment was 917 students.

In recent spring semesters, Haskell enrollments have topped 1,000 students. Budget shortfalls, however, have forced the university to take on fewer students.

Crime

KU student reports Peeping Tom incident

A 19-year-old Kansas University student told police she awoke Friday morning and saw a male shining a flashlight into her bedroom.

Police are investigating it as a case of window peeping.

The incident happened about 5 a.m. at an apartment east of campus, but police wouldn’t release the exact location, saying it could identify the victim in a sex crime.

The suspect, described as a younger white male, has not been located.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Crime Stoppers hot line at 843-TIPS.
