Fieldhouse next?

To the editor:

Is it time to tear down Allen Fieldhouse? Now that Division I college athletic budgets are so stressed by ever-rising costs, the value of the support from generations of Kansas University fans has been tossed aside and loyalty will now be defined solely by contribution dollars.

Lost is the hope that revenue generation would be balanced with acknowledgment of life-long supporters. This is a new era of big business college athletics, so why should KU be any different? What does Allen Fieldhouse have that can justify leaving this old World War II-era barn standing in this day of glitzy arenas and big-dollar donors? Don’t count too heavily on the mystique of the Phog or the value of KU tradition, because once they complete the first phase of modernization known as the points system, the fieldhouse just might be next.
