Museum gift shop needs help

Agency: Watkins Community Museum of History

Address: 1047 Mass.

Contact: Patsy, 841-4109.

Watkins Community Museum of History needs volunteers to work in Miss Lizzie’s Gifts, the museum gift shop. Volunteers will welcome and assist visitors to the shop, make sales and display the merchandise. The museum is also in need of new greeters. Volunteers can sign up for short shifts once a week, or more if they wish. These are also volunteer opportunities for teenagers after school and on Saturdays.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to teach hourlong basic computer skills class and other life skills training classes, such as interviewing, resume writing, and job search skills. Other topics will be considered. Classes should last one hour and may be offered one to two times per week. Specific days and times of classes can be arranged based on volunteers’ availability. Most of the courses’ students will be from the organization’s shelter, 946 N.H., although anyone in the community is welcome to attend. For more information, contact Sharon Morrow, 843-4188.
  • Ballard Community Center, 708 Elm, needs a volunteer substitute chef to prepare lunch for the 58 children in the early education program. Meals are simple and are planned in advance, so the volunteer will only need to handle the preparation and kitchen clean up. For more information, contact Diane Ensminger at 842-0729.
  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital needs volunteers in several areas. Oncology volunteers pamper patients, support the staff, and must be caring and consistent. Available shifts include Wednesday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon or on Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons.

Surgery waiting room volunteers act as a liaison between the patients and their families. These volunteers should enjoy being with people, and available to volunteer every other Tuesday morning or every other Friday morning. For more information call the hospital volunteer office at 840-3141.

  • Volunteers are also needed at the LMH South GI Lab at Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive. Volunteers in this area will assist with preparing rooms between patients, patient transportation and assisting the nurses on Friday mornings in a busy environment. For more information please call the hospital volunteer office at 840-3141.

Surgery needed; raffle set

Megan Hulse’s health insurance at Reuter Pipe Organ Co. covers the surgery she needs to relieve the pain in her upper and lower jaws.

“My teeth don’t line up,” she said. “When I bite down, instead of my teeth being straight across and up and down, there’s a gap because my lower jaw sticks out.”

But Hulse, 23, doesn’t have the $500 deductible or the $2,000 co-pay. And her doctors say she needs a chin reduction, considered cosmetic surgery, so it’s not covered.

Her mother, Mary Hulse, figures it will cost as much as $8,000.

The Hulses are trying to raise the money by selling raffle tickets for a full-size, hand-stitched quilt made by Megan’s 85-year-old grandmother in Indiana.

Tickets, which sell for $2 each or three for $5, are available at Medical Arts Pharmacy, 346 Maine; Midwest Regional Credit Union, 1015 W. Sixth St.; Reuter Pipe Organ Co., 1220 Timberedge Road.

Last month, a dinner at Immanuel Lutheran Church raised $1,400.

The drawing for the quilt will be at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 1 at Reuter.
