Kansas City resident killed in car wreck
Leavenworth — A Kansas City, Mo., man died after a Friday morning automobile accident near Leavenworth.
Darrell Holman, 46, was pronounced dead after being taken to Cushing Hospital, a Leavenworth Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said. The accident occurred at U.S. Highway 73 and County Road 33 northwest of Leavenworth.
The department said Holman was traveling on U.S. 73 when Deana Woodward, 46, Leavenworth, failed to stop at a stop sign as she traveled west on County Road 33. Her vehicle hit Holman’s car on the driver’s side. Holman was not wearing a seat belt. Woodward was wearing a seat belt and had no reported injuries, the department said.
Both vehicles, which were described by the spokesperson as passenger cars, were a total loss.
KU sets final exams
Kansas University has announced the following final examination:
- Aaron Ketchell, American Studies, “Holy Hills: Religion and Recreation in Branson, Missouri,” 1 p.m. Wednesday, 213 Bailey Hall.
- Mark A. Harpring, Spanish, “The Bachelor at the Crossroads of Gender and Class in the Late Nineteenth Century Spanish Novel,” 1 p.m. Aug. 20, 3040 Wescoe Hall.
- Aubrey Enloe, Psychology, “Trail-like Depressive Cognition Personality and Anxiety: An Examination of Interrelationships,” 1 p.m. Aug. 27, 343 Fraser Hall.
Extra patrols on duty for drunken drivers
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will assign extra deputies to a D.U.I. “saturation patrol” tonight in an undisclosed part of the county.
Five deputies will be assigned to find and stop drunken drivers between 11 p.m. today and 3 a.m. Sunday.
A grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation is helping pay the officers for the extra work.
KU journalism graduate named to academy post
A Kansas University graduate has been named vice president for communications for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.
Ron W. Roecker, a 1992 journalism graduate, has worked for the Recording Academy since 2001. He is responsible for marketing, advertising and public relations for the academy, including the Grammy Awards, MusiCares Foundation and Latin Recording Academy.
Before working for the Recording Academy, Roecker was vice president of Ketchum Entertainment Marketing and management supervisor at MS&L Inc. He has provided consultant services for Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Nike, the National Basketball Assn. and Levi’s, among others, and has taught public relations writing and media communications at the University of Southern California.
Police hope fingerprints solve office burglaries
Lawrence Police are sending fingerprints taken from professional offices struck this week in burglaries to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The break-ins happened overnight Tuesday at the business office of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, 325 Maine; a pediatrics and dental office at 346 Maine, and a building at 1311 Wakarusa Drive containing law offices, doctors’ offices and other businesses.
Police aren’t saying conclusively whether the crimes are linked. In many of the offices, the burglar or burglars forced entry, rummaged through cabinets and drawers and took cash or business checks.
KU graduate to lead alumni executives group
A Kansas University graduate was elected president of the Council of Alumni Association Executives at its annual meeting in July.
Loren R. Taylor, president and CEO of the University of Illinois Alumni Assn. since 1998, will lead the group, which includes 85 CEOs of alumni organizations nationwide.
Taylor received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from KU in 1978 and a master’s degree in speech and communication studies in 1987.
