Resident reports purse snatching

A woman told police a robber stole her purse and pushed her to the ground early Saturday as she walked home from a bar.

The 24-year-old woman was walking home about 1:45 a.m. from Cadillac Ranch, 2515 W. Sixth. St. Near the intersection of Crestline Road and Westdale Road, she noticed someone behind her, according to the report.

She felt a tug on her purse, but when she tried to turn around, the suspect pushed her down. She told police she didn’t get a good enough look at the suspect to give a description.

Her purse and contents were valued at $100, according to a report.

Program gives glimpse of Civil War battlefield

A special program telling about two brothers who fought on opposite sides during the Civil War will take place at 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

Items that soldiers were required or desired to carry onto the battlefield, as well as life on the battlefield and how it affected sibling relationships for those on opposing sides, will be discussed. Attendees will also learn how to locate their Confederate and Union ancestors.

KU gets grant to help nursing students

The Kansas University School of Nursing has received a federal grant to help nurses receive advanced degrees.

The $228,564 grant, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is for the “Nurse Education, Practice and Retention: Career Ladder” program. It promotes nurse retention by recruiting and mentoring nurses by encouraging them to complete KU’s online advancement programs.

The grant will assist KU in developing online and interactive television courses that allow nurses to complete advanced education without leaving their communities.
