Drug bust targets Pinckney duplex

Police seize cash, cocaine after being tipped off by neighborhood residents

Pinckney Neighborhood residents are pleased with a weekend drug bust at a home that they say has been a nuisance for months.

Police on Friday night served a search warrant at 338 Ind., a duplex in the neighborhood, and three other related buildings: a home at 809 N.Y.; a home at 1504 E. 21st St. Terrace; and a storage unit at 412 N. Iowa St. Police said they seized $10,000 cash, a handgun, about two ounces of crack cocaine and two ounces of powder cocaine.

Police estimate the drugs are worth $6,000.

The investigation by the joint city-county Drug Enforcement Unit began after members of the Pinckney Neighborhood Assn. complained to police about problems with the rental duplex, including pit bulls getting loose and cars coming and going at all hours.

John Pepperdine, president of the neighborhood association, said residents first told police about problems with the duplex in February or March. They were starting to get impatient and to wonder if anything would happen, he said, but they trusted police were working on it.

“It’s good to hear,” Pepperdine said of the weekend action. “We’re not vigilantes, and we don’t try to convict people. But we respond to complaints and work with the police.”

Linda Harrell, one of the owners of the duplex, said she hadn’t been aware of any of the problems with the home.

“No one has ever mentioned anything to us,” she said. “We definitely would like to have known.”

Pepperdine said police asked neighbors not to take up the problem with the landlords because it could have hampered the investigation.

Police arrested three Lawrence men, two of them age 30 and one age 29. They have not been charged pending testing of the suspected drugs.

Police are still investigating and could arrest several more people, said Sgt. Tarik Khatib, supervisor of the joint city-county drug unit.

All three arrested suspects have been released on bond.
