Small plane crashes near Eudora

Two people flying in a small plane suffered minor injuries when the aircraft had to make an emergency landing and crashed in a field northeast of Eudora, authorities said today.

A woman who was a passenger in the plane was taken by an ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, said Josh Kellerman, a Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman.

A Eudora firefighter looks over a two-seat Grumman airplane Friday morning that flipped over after it made an emergency landing in a soft plowed field just east of Eudora. One person was transferred by ground to Lawrence Memorial, the pilot had only minor injuries.

A man who was flying the plane also was injured, but he planned to have himself checked out at a hospital later, Kellerman said.

Their names were not immediately available.

The plane, a 1971 Grumman two-seater, had just taken off mid morning from the New Century Airport in Gardner when the engine stalled, Kellerman said. The pilot looked for a place to land and spotted a recently plowed wheat field northeast of Eudora, Kellerman said.

When the plane touched down on the soft uneven ground of the plowed field, the impact flipped the plane over onto its top, Kellerman said.

A LifeNet helicopter was called to the scene but was not used.
