County to certify election on Friday

Douglas County officials are preparing to consider counting 118 provisional ballots that could make the difference in a heated race for a Republican nomination for Congress.

The Douglas County Board of Canvassers – Jere McElhaney, Dean Nieder and Sue Neustifter – is scheduled to convene at 9 a.m. Friday at the county courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Voters who cast provisional ballots still have time to make their votes count. Voters who did not have proper identification at the polls Tuesday, and were told to cast provisional ballots, still have until 9 a.m. Friday to show proper proof of identification to election officials.

Their task: Certify results from Tuesday’s primary elections, which will include adding totals from provisional ballots cast by voters.

Of the estimated 300 provisional ballots cast in Douglas County, 118 were Republican ballots from the Third Congressional District. That’s the race where Kris Kobach is leading Adam Taff by a scant 87 votes, pending certification of results.

The district represents all of Wyandotte and Johnson counties, plus portions of east Lawrence and eastern Douglas County.

Wyandotte County canvassers also are meeting Friday morning to review results and consider about 600 provisional ballots; it is unknown how many were Republican ballots. The nearly 3,000 provisional ballots cast in Johnson County won’t be reviewed until Monday.

Douglas County voters forced to cast provisional ballots because they lacked proper identification at the polls – such as a driver’s license, bank statement, utility bill government check or other government document showing a name and proper address – have until 9 a.m. Friday to prove their identities to elections officials. Otherwise, their votes will not be counted.

Voters can take their identification materials to the county clerk’s office until 5 p.m. today, or beginning at 8 a.m. Friday. The office is located in the county courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Identification materials also may be faxed to the clerk’s office at 832-5192. Materials also can be scanned electronically and e-mailed to jdalquest@douglas-county.com.
