‘Dangerously hot’ weather expected today

Those headed out to vote in today’s primary election might wish they could cast a ballot for cooler weather — today’s heat index values are expected to climb to 110.

“It’s dangerously hot if you have to be outside today,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Schack said the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory until 6 p.m. for Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties and until 8 p.m. for Douglas County.

Lawrence’s temperature is expected to top out at 98 degrees this afternoon, with the humidity sending the heat index up to between 105 and 110 degrees, Schack said.

“If you have to be outside today, make sure you wear light clothing and drink plenty of fluids,” Schack said.

Morning temperatures were in the 70s, but were expected to reach into the 90s at noon and climb through the afternoon, under sunny skies and breezy conditions. South winds were expected between 5 and 15 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.

But relief from the heat is on the way tonight as a cold front moves in.

Tonight, the National Weather Service is forecasting a 40 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m.

Schack said Wednesday’s morning low will be 74, with the high reaching only to 88. There’s a 40 percent chance for showers Wednesday before 1 p.m. Breezy conditions continue Wednesday and Wednesday night, with winds shifting direction from southwesterly to northerly, gusting between 25 and 30 mph.

Thursday through Saturday, high temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s, with the lows in the low to mid 60s.
