Hot afternoon ahead
Kansas University students who are still moving in and out of apartments today won’t get a break from the weather — afternoon heat index values will be 101 to 106.
“If you have to be outside working today, be careful of those dangerous heat indices,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. The National Weather Service advises that if you plan to be outside, drink plenty of fluids that are not alcoholic or caffeinated to avoid dehydration.
Schack said today’s high temperature is expected to climb from this morning’s upper 70s to 97 degrees by late afternoon. And the high humidity will send the heat index to well over 100 degrees, Schack said.
“We’ll have plenty of sunshine this afternoon,” Schack said.
Today will be windy, with southerly breezes 10 to 15 mph, gusting to as high as 30 mph. The average high temperature for this date is 91 and the record is 105, set in 1918.
Tonight’s temperature drops down to 76, under mostly clear skies.
Tuesday’s temperatures will be hot again, with the high expected to be 98 and the heat index values again reaching above the 100-degree mark.
This morning, a storm system moved through northeast Kansas, bringing the heaviest rains to Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. Lawrence had some sprinkles this morning, but only enough to wet the pavement.
The next chance for rain will be early Wednesday morning, with a 30 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. Wednesday morning’s low will be 74. There is a 20 percent chance for isolated thunderstorms Wednesday during the day, with the high reaching 89.
The highs for the rest of the work week are expected to be in the upper 80s, Schack said.
