Firebirds burning opponents

Free State sweeps two games at home to win eighth straight

It was just another in a long line of miserable days for the opponents of Free State High’s baseball team.

In a pair of games added to the schedule after rain washed out most of the River City Baseball Festival last weekend, the Firebirds outscored their two opponents 30-1 on Wednesday at FSHS, beating Emporia 11-1 and Leavenworth 19-0.

The pair of victories extended Free State’s winning streak to eight games. Only one — Tuesday’s dramatic 11-10 victory over Shawnee Mission West — was decided by less than six runs.

Anybody with Free State coming up on the schedule better hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

“We come out every day with the same mentality,” sophomore Brett Lisher said. “If you come out thinking you’re going to kill people, you’re not going to be ready.”

Apparently, the Firebirds don’t think about blowing out teams. They just do it.

Wednesday was no exception. Free State (12-2) had complete control of Emporia from the onset, with Ryne Price providing the solid pitching and solid hitting. On the mound, Price allowed just one run in 5 1/3 innings of work. At the plate, he belted a home run in his first at-bat, and later tripled and doubled to go 3-for-3.

Price’s only official at-bat against Leavenworth was a two-run double, giving him six straight at-bats with an extra-base hit.

Scott Heitshusen added three hits and two RBIs against Emporia, and Lisher drove in a pair of runs to help FSHS cruise to the six-inning run-rule win.

In the nightcap, the Firebirds had even more offensive clout, with 10 different hitters stroking 15 hits. Lisher had the big blast, a second-inning grand slam to left field that put FSHS up 8-0. With the wind howling out to left, Lisher wasn’t about to say it was all muscle.

But he’ll take it, anyway.

“Days like these, hitters get pretty lucky,” Lisher said. “If you get it up, it’s going to go out.”

Jake Hoover also homered against the Pioneers, but despite the golden opportunity to get the ball out of the park, FSHS coach Mike Hill was pleased that his players weren’t swinging for the fences. It must have been tempting.

“It’s easy on a day like today to want to get under something and lift,” Hill said. “That’s not who we are as a team. I felt real positive about what they did. It’s tough to hit on a day like this.”

Josh Moreno picked up the victory in the nightcap, pitching five shutout innings. He struck out seven and surrendered just two hits.

The Firebirds look to continue their hot stretch today, when they play a home game against SM Northwest at 5:30 p.m.
