Volunteers serve as charity benefactors

Twenty-six community members served up food and drinks Tuesday night at Henry T’s Bar and Grill, 3520 W. Sixth St., as Classic Eagle and Henry T’s played host to the fifth annual Tips for Tips and Tots.

Tips earned by the volunteers will benefit Crime Stoppers and O’Connell Youth Ranch. Firefighters, bankers, lawyers and a lobbyist were among the servers at the bar and grill.

Event organizers hoped to raise more than $4,000 between 5 p.m. and midnight. By 8:30 p.m., organizers said servers had raised about $1,000.

Lecture

Former Navy secretary to speak tonight at KU

James Webb, former secretary of the Navy and a best-selling author, will present the annual Walter S. Sutton Ethics Lecture tonight at Kansas University.

Webb will present “Perspectives of an American Ronin” at 7 p.m. in Woodruff Auditorium at the Kansas Union. A ronin is a Japanese samurai warrior with no master except the truth.

Webb became secretary of the Navy in 1987. He resigned in 1988 after refusing to a reduction of Navy forces during a budget-cutting period. More recently, he has been a vocal critic of President Bush’s decision to go to war in Iraq.

John Ross, center, owner of Laser Logic Inc., takes an order from Steve Kapp, right, with help from Breanne Patton. Ross has waited tables for the event each year since it began. His biggest tip to date was 0, he said Tuesday.

Webb is author of six best-selling novels, including “Fields of Fire” and “Rules of Engagement,” which was made into a movie starring Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson.

The lecture, sponsored by the KU International Center for Ethics in Business and the School of Business, is free and open to the public.
