Berkley nets 4 goals; FSHS falls

Rebekah Berkley didn’t settle for the hat trick Tuesday. She earned the elusive golden sombrero instead.

Berkley, a Free State High senior, scored a school-record four goals in the Firebirds’ 5-4, double-overtime loss to Shawnee Mission South at the FSHS field.

“It just feels like you give everything and you lose,” Berkley said. “It’s disappointing.”

Frustrating, too, because Free State basically gave four goals to the Raiders. SM South’s first two scores went right between the legs of goalie Meghan Hrenchir, and middle defender Emilie Humbarger accidentally kicked two others — including the game-winner 53 seconds into the second OT — into the Raiders’ net.

“For whatever reason, we didn’t get good play in the net,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said. “It’s tough when you score four goals and lose.”

Free State had knotted the score at 1 on Berkley’s first goal 81/2 minutes after the start, but the Raiders raced to a 3-1 lead at the break, then went on top 4-1 five minutes into the second half.

“We were a little down,” Berkley said, “because their goals were cheap, but we knew we could come back and win.”

At 33:34, Berkley left-footed a strike into the goal mouth from the right side. Four minutes later, she converted a penalty kick after teammate Clare Robinson was knocked down in front of the box. Suddenly, the Firebirds were within a goal of forging a tie.

Finally, with 12:41 showing, Berkley posted her record fourth goal on a breakaway, thanks in large part to a feed from Wallis Romzek.

Free State's Rebekah Berkley, right, who scored a school-record four goals, fights for the ball against a Shawnee Mission South defender. Despite Berkley's big day, the Firebirds fell, 5-4 in double-overtime, Tuesday at Free State.

“She stepped up like the big-time all-state player she is,” Pendleton said. “She showed why her picture is on the wall.”

Berkley’s picture is in the Firebirds’ Hall of Fame because she earned all-state honors as a junior last year.

“The kids fed off her energy,” Pendleton said. “They started to believe.”

Berkley had a few cracks at recording a fifth goal, but she was whistled for being offsides a couple of times, and the Raiders’ goalie blunted a couple of other shots.

The Firebirds had played Monday at Junction City, winning 10-0, but Berkley didn’t think she or her teammates tired late and in the overtimes.

“That was a fairly easy game,” she said of Monday’s rout. “I felt really good. I don’t think tiredness was a factor.”

Free State’s record dipped to 2-6-1, while SM South climbed to 8-3.
