LHS tradition

To the editor:

A picture in the April 22 Journal-World advises that the popular “Showtime” is again being presented by Lawrence High School.

Does anyone remember when this musical tradition began? Think back 49 years to the spring of 1955. The LHS Class of 1955 put on “The Red & Black Revue” with the theme of “Calendar Capers.” There was a different act for each month of the year. Money from this series of acts, entirely written, produced and cast by the senior class (1955), was used to buy the class gift to the school, a bronze statue of Lawrence High’s “Chesty Lion.”

The “Chesty Lion” stands today in the circle drive entrance at Lawrence High, a proud reminder of a great group of kids.

Class of ’55,
