The Journal-World received a special award Friday night for more than a century of service to Lawrence and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

The award, presented by Ross Beach, chairman of Douglas County Bank, was accepted by Dolph C. Simons Jr., chairman and chief executive of The World Company on behalf of its more than 500 employees.

The World Company owns the Journal-World and Sunflower Broadband.

“I’m convinced the next 100 years can be better than the past, but we can’t do it if we’re complacent,” Simons said.
