Free State golf falls to Rockhurst

Kansas City Rockhurst downed Free State High, 355-320, in high school boys golf Thursday at Lawrence CC.

Quinn Klutman led FSHS with an 85.

“I love golf more than anybody, and I’ve never been so miserable in my life,” coach Jack Schreiner said of cold, damp conditions. “The course is in tremendous condition, but the weather was awful for everybody.”

Free State will compete at the Topeka West Invitational on Monday at Topeka CC.

Two more Firebirds headed to state meet

Stilwell — Free State High’s girls swimming team continued its grueling schedule Thursday, swimming at Blue Valley West. The Firebirds defeated the Jaguars, 368-263, and Free State’s Cambry McNabb (diving) and Rory Ezell (500 freestyle) qualified for the state championships.

“This was a good meet. We did a great job today,” FSHS coach Jama Crady said. “They tried hard. Their effort was good. This was our sixth meet in two weeks. They’re tired, but they kept the intensity up, so it was good.”

Free State competes Saturday at the Wichita Trinity Invitational.

Olathe South stops Free State soccer, 3-0

Olathe — Defending Class 6A champion Olathe South tripped Free State, 3-0, in girls soccer Thursday.

Rebekah Berkley had several shots on goal, while Megan Hrenchir and Banaka Okuwone were cited for strong play.

“We are disappointed with the loss, but competed well and leave with positive feelings about the quality of our effort and desire we showed for 80 minutes,” coach Jason Pendleton said.

FSHS (1-5-1) travels Monday to Junction City.
