Scorching Free State rolls to baseball victory

Here’s the mark of a good baseball team:

Free State High played two Sunflower League baseball games in three days, outscored its opponents by 20 runs in just 10 innings, and the Firebirds’ coach thinks FSHS still has untapped success lurking.

“There’s room to improve,” Free State coach Mike Hill said after the Firebirds’ 13-3, five-inning rout of Olathe South on Thursday at FSHS. “That’s the good thing.”

The Firebirds opened the week with a 12-2, five-inning win Tuesday over Shawnee Mission North.

A short, successful week of games — filled with booming bats and a pair of 10-run, spread-rule victories — has Free State in midseason form.

Of course, it nearly is midseason.

“We’re finally starting to get the hits with guys in scoring position,” senior Ryne Price said. “The first few games, we were getting one hit an inning. They were never back-to-back-to-back.”

The Firebirds (7-2 overall, 4-1 Sunflower League) turned that around Thursday against Olathe South. With the wind howling out to left field, Free State shook off the desire to swing for the fences and instead laced 13 hits.

Seven of them were in the bottom of the third inning, which started off with Olathe South up 3-2 and ended with Free State up 10-3.

“I like the way we’re swinging the bats,” Hill said. “We’re extremely aggressive swinging the bats, and in a positive way. There’s a difference between being aggressive and being foolish. We’re doing it the right way.”

The eight-run third inning was highlighted by home runs from Price and sophomore Scott Heitshusen. Price also had an RBI triple in the inning, and Heitshusen finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Eight of Free State’s nine hitters recorded a hit Thursday, and seven of the nine each had at least one RBI.

Not bad for five innings of work.

“Certainly, the level we’re at now is pleasing,” Hill said. “But if you want to be a state-championship-type club, you’ve got to improve.”

Jake Hoover picked up the win, pitching 42/3 innings and striking out four batters. After a league game with SM South on Tuesday, the Firebirds will play three games in the River City Festival starting Thursday.
