Free country

To the editor:

“Land of the free.” Really?

Why is it that if I own property, I can’t decide to whom I’m going to rent or lease it? “No. You look like a pothead to me.” Oh, that’s discrimination. …

Why is it that some people find it so necessary to ensure they, who’ll probably never enter any business with which I’m affiliated, can come into a “smoke-free environment”? We all have rights.

You have the “right” not to patronize my business. You could let me know. Who knows? I may change my mind and become “smoke-free.” Maybe not.

Employees, present and potential, have the “right” not to apply, or to turn down an offer or make other arrangements.

No, I don’t smoke — not anymore, anyway. Nor do I operate a business — not anymore, anyway. But if I did, I’d sure as heck fight for personal liberty instead of trying to infringe on that of others.
