KU journalism student wins Hearst award

A Kansas University senior has won $500 in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program.

John Domoney, of Leawood, took sixth place in the personality/profile writing category for an article published in the University Daily Kansan on Todd “Leaper” Williams. Williams, a member of the Special Olympics Hall of Fame, has for the past 33 years assisted the KU athletic department.

Domoney’s category included 89 entries from 49 universities and colleges.

Ozawkie representative files for re-election

Rep. Lee Tafanelli, R-Ozawkie, filed Saturday for re-election to the 47th District of the Kansas House of Representatives.

Tafanelli said in a statement that he would continue to focus on economic development, education, lowering the cost of health care and public safety.

He is chairman of the Select Committee on Kansas Security and vice-chairman of the House Environment Committee. Tafanelli also serves on the House Tax, Higher Education and the Public Safety Budget committees.

Tafanelli, who lives in Ozawkie, was elected to the House in 2000.

Governor to speak at KU Med Center

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will speak on “The State of Health Care in Kansas” this week at the Kansas University Medical Center.

Sebelius will speak at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the School of Nursing Auditorium. Her speech is part of an event recognizing the 20th anniversary of the KU department of health policy and management.
