Jail services

To the editor:

In agreement with recent letters by Ms. Guidry, Ms. Dalton, Mr. Teal and I am sure many others, I find it disturbing that the county would seek to charge inmates for essential health services. As has been stated, the brunt of that cost is most often borne not by the inmates themselves but by their friends and/or family who support them.

If the number of uninsured and the demographics of inmates are any indication, they may already be struggling to obtain a minimum of health services for themselves. Surely there are more effective ways to reduce the burden of the jail on the county’s budget that would not have such inequitable consequences.
