Rezoning care

To the editor:

I would like to respond to the article published March 18 titled “County industrial park rejected.” On March 17, the County Commission rejected a proposal to rezone 155 acres off the Farmers Turnpike from agriculture to industrial. In this article, Mark Fagan states that Charles Jones rejected the proposal because the site was too far away from the city and outside of the community’s urban growth area.

While this is true, there are other reasons the planning staff, Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission and now Commissioner Jones have rejected the proposal. It does not fit into an overall plan for the county and its growth. It is my understanding that over these next few months, these governmental bodies will be discussing and forming a comprehensive plan for industrial development in the county. Until this comprehensive plan is made, it is critical that we do not haphazardly rezone tracts of land that are currently classified for agricultural use.
