FSHS tennis third at Emporia invite

Emporia — Free State High’s Keith Pipkin went 3-1 at No. 1 singles and placed second to lead the Firebirds to a third-place finish Saturday at the Emporia Invitational boys tennis tournament.

Cody Young was 1-3 and fourth at No. 2 singles; both doubles teams — Abel Martens/Zach Morgenstern at No. 1 and Hani Chahine/Blake Thames at No. 2 — went 2-2 and placed third.

SM West cruises against LHS, 9-1

Overland Park — Megan Johnson scored Lawrence High’s lone goal Saturday in a 9-1 girls soccer loss to Shawnee Mission West.

Johnson scored with 15 minutes remaining after SM West had scored the game’s first eight goals.

Among the highlights for the Lions, coach Matt Makens said, was the play of Lindsey Lawrence.

“Lindsey Lawrence played a thousand percent instead of a hundred percent,” Makens said.

LHS (0-2) will play Tuesday at Free State.

Fightin’ Indians claim 11 scholar athletes

Haskell Indian Nations University has earned 11 berths on the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference scholar-athlete listing. Football and softball led the way with three selections apiece. The football players named were Ben Baker, William Gilbert and Anthony Leadingfox. Softball players honored were Karie Johnston, Katie Renwick and Julie Sharp.

Also named were Alta Malchoff and Deborah Butler from volleyball, Lisa Dixon and Layatalati Hill from basketball and cross country’s Natasha Miles.

MCAC scholar-athletes must be at least a sophomore, have a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade-point average, and have completed at least two semesters at their present institution.
