Police investigating overnight homicide in south Lawrence

Lawrence police detectives are investigating the department’s first homicide of the year — a man whose body was found Sunday morning in a south Lawrence apartment complex.
Police have identified the victim as a 28-year-old Lawrence resident who was possibly a guest at a party held overnight at the Jefferson Commons Apartment complex, 2511 W. 31st St. Police are not releasing the name, pending notification of family members.
Police Lt. Dave Cobb would not release how the man died, but said “obvious signs of violence had been inflicted on the victim.”
Police were called to the apartment just before 7 a.m. Sunday.Cobb said a tenant returned home and found a body lying on the floor inside a common area of the apartment, shared by several roommates.
Late Sunday morning, crime scene investigators were still on the scene. A third floor apartment in building 10 at the complex was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
Cobb said detectives believed the party was going on as late as 5 a.m., but no one was on the scene when police arrived, except the roommate who discovered the body.
Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call the anonymous CrimeStoppers Tips Line at (785) 843-TIPS.
