Firebirds roll, 8-0; Lions split

April 4, 2004

— Max Ellenbecker tossed a three-hit shutout, and Jake Hoover drove in three runs as Free State High's baseball team defeated Shawnee, Okla., 8-0, Saturday in the Four-State Festival.

Ellenbecker (1-0) struck out three and walked just one.

"Max was outstanding today," Free State coach Mike Hill said. "He had command of multiple pitches. He was in the zone, and he had their hitters baffled."

The Firebirds built an early 4-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and one in the second. The run-rule-shortened game ended in the sixth inning.

Free State improved to 4-1. The Firebirds will play Tuesday at Olathe North.

Lawrence High

Lee's Summit, Mo. -- John Parker struck out six batters in six shutout innings as Lawrence High defeated Lee's Summit North, 6-0, Saturday in the first game of a baseball doubleheader.

Lee's Summit North scored six runs in the sixth inning to take the nightcap, 7-4.

"Seventy-three percent of his pitches were strikes," LHS coach David Petry said of Parker. "He really was getting ahead of the hitters all day long and really was in control the whole ballgame."

Courtney Hutchinson drove in two runs and stole three bases in the opener.

Lawrence took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth in the second game, but Lee's Summit North struck for six runs.

"Our pitching had been pretty good up until that one inning," Petry said.

LHS (4-1) will play Tuesday at Shawnee Mission East.
