HINU softball sweeps Central

McPherson — Haskell Indian Nations University’s softball team seems to be warming up with the weather.

“Maybe they’re fair-weather players or something,” HINU coach Gary Tanner quipped after the Fightin’ Indians swept a doubleheader with Central College, 9-4 and 6-2.

Katie Renwick (4-2) won both games with nine strikeouts on the day.

Tiffany McIntosh had two hits, including a triple, and Natasha Trujillo and Natasha Henson each had a pair of hits with a double.

“The biggest thing for me was that this was our conference opener, and we only had one error in two games,” Tanner said.

“That’s significant because we had been giving away a lot of runs.

“It felt real good. Our team really hit well. We just all hit real well — line drives in the gaps, which is what we’ve been trying to do since August. We just did it today.”

HINU next will play host to Newman at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday.

Tuesday’s game with McPherson has been canceled.

Firebirds postponed

Saturday’s scheduled Free State-Manhattan high school soccer game at the FSHS field has been postponed until April 17 because it conflicted with ACT testing.

Clarification

A photo caption in Wednesday’s Journal-World did not explain that Lawrence High second baseman Paul Johnson threw out a runner after he misplayed, then retrieved, a ground ball.
