Budget cuts force layoffs at KU Printing Services

Budget cuts have led to another four layoffs at Kansas University.

Four employees are being cut at KU Printing Services, a self-sustaining operation that provides printing and mailing services to on-campus clients.

Marilu Goodyear, vice provost for information services, said budget cuts across campus had cut back on the number of job requests at Printing Services. That left the service losing money last year, though she did not specify the losses.

“Our clients across the university have had to cut budgets and, we suspect, have reduced their printing purchases,” she said.

The employees will lose their jobs effective Nov. 9. They are classified employees in the customer service, mailing, electronic publishing and production departments.

KU officials said they would assist the workers in finding other employment, noting that laid-off classified employees have first consideration for other university jobs.

Printing Services has 33 full-time employees. Officials said they plan to eliminate three other positions being vacated by an August resignation, an upcoming retirement and a voluntary departure of another employee.

The Printing Services cuts are the first layoffs KU has announced since September 2002. Last year, KU laid off 35 employees and cut 70 vacant positions in response to an $11.5 million cut in state funding.
